25 Nov How Dominica is on track to become the world’s first ‘hurricane-proof’ country

When Hurricane Maria struck Dominica in 2017, more than 90 percent of the island’s structures were destroyed. Today, Dominica is rebuilding to scale accordingly to climate change already affecting their country.

To ensure that climate resilience was kept in mind during reconstruction, and to figure out how to hurricane-proof everything as much as possible, the Climate Resilience Execution Agency of Dominica (CREAD) was established in early 2018. On the first days of 2019, the Climate Resilience Act became fully effective. 

Since the implementation of the plan, Dominica’s economy has grown by nine percent, the tourism is on the rise, five hundred new homes have been built, and more than 1,000 are under construction.
